Connect Medium to SiteOps

Medium puts your writing in front of readers who would never find your own blog: its feed, its topic pages, its email digests. For a young site that is free distribution — the same article, a second audience.

The catch with republishing is search engines seeing two copies and picking the wrong one. The fix is the canonical link: the Medium copy declares your own site as the original, so your blog keeps the search credit. Medium's own Import-story flow sets that canonical link for you when you paste your article's URL.

The honest part: Medium closed its publishing API to new tools, so no tool can post to Medium on your behalf any more, and SiteOps will not pretend otherwise. What SiteOps does instead is prepare everything — the formatted article, the five tags, the canonical link — and deep-link you straight into Medium's Import page. You paste the article's URL, press Import, and Medium builds the story with the canonical link already set. One guided step, no token to generate or paste.

If something does not work

Why can't SiteOps just post to Medium automatically like the other networks?: Medium closed its publishing API to new tools, and issues no new tokens — no tool can post to Medium on your behalf any more. Rather than pretend, SiteOps prepares the whole article and deep-links you into Medium's own Import-story flow, which is the supported path today. It is one guided paste instead of an automatic send.
The Import didn't set the canonical link: Medium sets the canonical link from the URL you import, so import from the article's live URL rather than pasting the text. Re-run Import from medium.com/p/import with your article's URL and the canonical line appears at the bottom of the imported story.
Will Medium hurt my site's search ranking?: Not with the canonical link set — and Medium's Import sets it from the URL you paste. The Medium copy tells search engines your site is the original, so ranking credit flows to your blog while Medium brings its own readers.
Can stories go to a publication instead of my profile?: Yes — after you Import a story to your profile you can add it to any publication your account can publish to, from Medium's own story menu. SiteOps prepares the article the same way either way.

Before you start

A Medium account for you or the brand — free at medium.com. If your articles should land in a publication instead of a profile, have that publication set up and make sure your account can publish to it.
Your own blog connected through the publishing webhook (the Publishing section in Settings). Import points the canonical link at your site, so the original has to exist first.
A couple of minutes per article to run Medium's Import — paste the URL, press Import. There is nothing to set up once and no token to keep.
